In this video from Ted Talk, Steven Levitt discusses car seats and the statistics between using car seats as opposed to traditional lap and shoulder seat belts. He ended up taking raw stats from the government websites and did four crash tests with children age 3 to 6 in car seats and traditional seat bets. He found that there wasn't really much of a difference between the seat belts alone and the car seats. He then stated that the reason people didn't believe or accept his idea was because they believed that since car seats were expensive and difficult to use, they must be more effective. Through his research he found that it really wouldn't make a big difference and the only reason people would buy car seats would be the same reason why people would take placebos. They believe it must work because of how it looks or how difficult it is to use and automatically ruled out the simple and cheap alternative even though it may be more effective.
